Honest review time: The Aegis Legend from Geek Vape

Not long ago Geek Vape released a nearly indestructible mod called the Aegis that got plenty of attention after reviewers were seen dunking it in water and running over it with their cars only to have it carry on working like nothing much had happened. It was a single battery 18650/26650 device that placed durability over functionality giving up such things as on-board charging in exchange for a water proof rating. Building on their success with the original Aegis, Geek Vape just released a follow up device called the Aegis Legend which addresses some if not all of the minor issues the original might have faced. The Mod:

The new Aegis Legend shares a lot of the look and style of the original Aegis with it’s high grade silicone encased alloy body with metal and leather highlights it remains just as sharp looking as it’s earlier counterpart. It also shares the original Aegis’ IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating as well as it’s military grade shockproof rating. With the original Aegis we saw all kinds of torture tests performed on it with the device for the most part coming out unscathed and it appears that it’s successor is built just as tough. While it may not appeal to everyone with it’s rugged looks and construction I know there are just as many out there who work outdoors or in industrial positions who would covet such a durable piece of equipment. It comes in a variety of styles and colours like silver, black & orange, snakeskin, camo and stealth black.

The device sports a solid looking centered stainless steel 510 connection with a spring loaded center pin that looks to be gold plated and fits all of my 25mm gear with room to spare. It’s got an angled fire button and rocker bar style adjustment buttons that feel firm and responsive with absolutely zero rattle from anywhere on the device. Unlike the original it now runs off two high drain 18650 batteries which not only increases the capacity but also increases the max output of the device. Considering current trends I suppose they could have gone with 2×700 batteries but that would likely add considerable bulk where Geek Vape has managed to keep it compact and clean. It almost feels smaller than the original because of the shape. It also sports an improved battery door, where the original had a somewhat annoying threaded cap the new Aegis Legend has a newer looking flip open door that’s secured with a spring loaded tab. It feels really robust and can be a bit tricky to get closed but it sort of needs to in order to maintain it’s dustproof, waterproof and shockproof rating. It’s actually made up of as many as six different materials to earn those ratings and look as good as it does but admittedly the silicone exterior can be a bit of a dust magnet.

With a new chip called the AS it boasts a max output of 200W but still packs all of the same features and functions of the original and with the added benefit of a colour screen the Aegis Legend has definitely matured. It supports resistances as low as 0.05ohm and as high as 3ohm and now fires incredibly fast thanks to the new chip. It includes all of the same modes as the original like variable wattage, variable power curve, temp control, TCR and Bypass mode and for the most part functions exactly like the original did. It also works the same with five clicks to turn it on and off and three clicks to highlight the mode with the +/- letting you cycle through them. Subsequent clicks of the fire button lets you cycle through the on screen options like locking the resistance or adjusting wattage if using TC and resetting Puff count. Pressing fire and +/- lets you adjust the brightness of the screen and holding both + and – locks the wattage.

Another added feature of the new Legend is it now supports both firmware updates and USB charging where the original only allowed for updates after unscrewing a shielded port. With the new Legend a thick rubber plug secures the micro USB charge/update port while still maintaining it’s dust and waterproof ratings. The implementation of the plug which sits on a sort of swivel makes it a bit tricky plugging it in to charge and not every cord will fit but at least they include a second plug should you accidentally lose or break the first one.

The Tank and Coils:

Along with the Aegis Legend mod the kit comes packed with a new subohm tank called the Aero Mesh. It’s a pretty standard looking subohm tank that includes a twist open top fill, bottom adjustable airflow and a comfortable 5ml capacity(2ml if TPD). It comes with a wide bore delrin 810 drip tip but the kit also includes a 510 adapter should you prefer a smaller drip tip. It comes equipped with a clear bubble glass but the kit also includes a straight glass if the bubble look isn’t your thing. The airflow adjustment has stops at either end and is quite tight almost too tight at times but once you set it it’s going to stay in place. I was comfortable using it at full open where it gives a nice very slightly restricted lung hit which I think it’s best suited to since the coils might be a bit too rowdy to use it as a mouth to lung tank.

It comes with two coils one is a 0.2ohm kanthal mesh coil rated from 30-90w with a recommended range of 60-80W and a 0.15ohm Ni80 quad coil that uses straight wire and is rated from 60-80W with no recommended range. I started with the mesh coil and got some really good performance out of it and found my sweet spot around the 60W mark and didn’t need to push it much higher. The flavour and clouds it produces are fantastic and one of the better mesh experiences I’ve had of late. I also haven’t experienced any leaking with it which has been an issue with other mesh coils I’ve used. The 0.15ohm quad coil I found I needed to run a bit higher around 75W, had a bit more of a break in time where the mesh had virtually none and also would run a bit hotter, decent performance for a quad coil I’d say with plenty of vapour production and again good flavour, maybe not quite as saturated as with the mesh but a good vape none the less.

Overall

Geek Vape knows how to make a solid mod and the Aegis Legend is an excellent follow up to the original Aegis. The mod is good looking, durable and works well while the tank it comes with is no slouch either performing just as well as other subohm tanks in it’s class if not better in some regards. I’d have no trouble recommending the Aegis Legend to anyone looking for a well made, built to last and full featured setup.
