Honest one shot: Jack-O-Latte from Great Canadian Fog

I personally can’t stand the cold of winter but I do look forward to this time of year for at least one reason, seasonal flavours!! Just recently Mr. Ken Ross of Great Canadian Fog sent over a few new things he’s been working on. One of them immediately caught my attention as it’s a much sought after flavour this time of year particularly among the Ugg boot and yoga pants crowd, you guessed it, it’s every basic white girls dream, pumpkin spice and more specifically a pumpkin spice latte. Here are my honest thoughts on Jack-O-Latte from Great Canadian Fog.

Bottles: The juice comes in a dark colored 60ml authentic Chubby Gorilla bottle, one of the newer ones with the nicer lids. The label is also dark coloured and has a sort of Halloween theme to it with a trio of pumpkins lined up across the front with the initials G.C.F. tucked inside them and a broom almost hidden in the background along with some leaves. I didn’t see the ratio listed but I’d guess it to be a 70 or 75vg blend. The bottle I got was in 3mg and here’s a shot of the bottle I received:

Setup: Testing was done mostly in a DAYWON from MissionXV with a little spaced fused clapton(2×30/40ni80), 6 wraps on a 2.5mm coming out to 0.97 ohms and running between 15-20w. Using Puff cotton, rda rinsed and rewicked in between. Here’s a shot of a fresh build:

My thoughts: Maybe it’s the colder weather or the festive feeling of the holidays fast approaching but I think most of us enjoy at least the smell of pumpkin spice if not the nostalgic flavour it’s so very well known for. I think we’ve all got a little basic white girl in us cause even I at least once a year get a craving for something seasoned with the ol’ pumpkin spice. For me that usually means a pumpkin spice latte if I can’t get my hands on a decent pie and I’m guessing Ken’s been getting that seasonal itch too cause he’s come up with his own recipe for basic white girl bait and I’ve got to say he’s done a pretty fantastic job.

Jack-O-Latte hits the spot with a warm creamy gentle pumpkin spice upfront and finishes with a rich creamy latte. Now I don’t know if I actually taste real pumpkin but my mind definitely associates the spice blend in it with that rich seasonal treat we all love and crave this time of year. It’s not a sharp spice, it’s distinct but not overbearing and very well balanced with the other elements. For me it’s not far off from a Chai spice blend but really toned down so it doesn’t take over or overwhelm, it just lets you know it’s still there. Hints of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice, maybe some ginger give it that classic holiday season taste.

At this point I think most folks will agree that the combination of pumpkin spice and frothy latte work really well together and just like the best selling drink this time of year the combination of pumpkin spice and coffee in Jack-O-Latte is a real treat. The steamed milk aspect really just gives it a bit of milky creaminess and probably takes a bit of the abruptness of the espresso down which is a good thing because espresso is a strong flavour and it could easily overwhelm even a notable spice blend like pumpkin spice. Ken managed to strike a really nice balance between the two main flavours and I’d say what he crafted is a pretty fantastic tribute to the now iconic seasonal drink. Basic white girls be like moths to a flame!!

Overall:

If you’re like me and you enjoy the taste of a pumpkin spice latte then this would be the one to check out!! I haven’t seen many like it and of the ones I’ve tried this is the most like an actual pumpkin spice latte yet. Definitely a fantastic warm and spicy treat for this time of year!! So huge thanks to Ken for this delicious treat, you’ve made a basic girl out of me!!!
