Honest review time: Vape Slayer Ltd.

When I was at CVE Toronto I stopped by a booth that happened to have a sign and business cards that looked very much like my own. Of course I pulled one of mine out and offered it to the gentleman manning the booth and we both shared a chuckle at the similarities in our cards and the fact that we also shared the same first name, clearly he had good taste. He was representing a company that was new to me and after our jovial introduction he was quite happy to set me up with a set to review. Here are my honest thoughts on the Vape Slayer line from Vape Slayer Ltd.

Bottles:

The juices come in authentic Chubby Gorilla v3 bottles and if you haven’t used one yet they address all of the issues us vapers had with the originals. No more leaking/weeping tops and no more lids popping off unexpectedly while refilling, nice!! The labels are all quite similar and have a wood grain finish in the background with VSL in large letters across the front, the name of the flavour just below it and all of the good info we like to see in fine print around the bottom and sides. One complaint about the labels is the names don’t relate to the flavours and they don’t list the profiles on the bottles making it a bit of a pain figuring out which is which. They also looked a bit scratchy but that could just be a printing issue. The VG ratios vary so I’ll list them with the descriptions and the set I got was in 3mg. Here’s a shot of the bottles I received.

Setup:

Testing was done mostly in a Hadaly clone with a three core alien(3×28/36ni80) build from the Canadian Coil makers SaddleHorse Blues, 4/5 wraps on a 2.5mm coming out to 0.28 ohms and running between 35-45w. Using Puff cotton, rda rinsed and rewicked in between. Here’s a shot of a fresh build:

Ares

Site description:  Tasty pink lemonade with a strawberry twist. 80VG

My thoughts: With Ares I get a nice sweet mix of strawberry and a light citrus. Compared to most other lemonade flavours that I’ve tried this one is quite mild and really comes off more sweet then it does sour or tart. It’s not sugary sweet or anything it’s just not very sour like you’d expect from a lemonade. I find it’s almost more of a strawberry candy with a bit of lemon as the taste of lemonade comes through almost more as an after taste then it does the main profile. Which might be appreciated by some as lemonade flavours can often be a bit biting thanks to the citrus in them. This one though is nice and mild, gently sweet with just a light touch of lemon so nearly anyone should be able to enjoy it but those looking for a sharp sour or tart lemonade you won’t find it with this one. I personally enjoy the lightness of this lemonade but for the God of war this one is pretty peaceful..

Cerberus

Site description: A thick, creamy cheesecake with a wicked blueberry coulis. 85VG

My thoughts: Cerberus starts off with a nice sweet blueberry jam sort of taste with a light cheesecake flavour underneath and just a hint of graham cracker crust on the finish. It’s a pretty straightforward mix and I’m sure I’ve tried something similar before with other cheesecake flavours that I’ve reviewed but overall I’d say it’s pretty well balanced. With many blueberry flavours I’ve found them to taste floral or like perfume but Cerberus keeps it tasting more like a soft jam. Not too strong or cloying but enough that you get the taste of a sweet blueberry coulis over top of a rich creamy cheesecake. The cheesecake flavour is very familiar so if you’ve tried one before you’ll probably know the taste I’m referring to. It’s cheesy, creamy and well, tastes like cheesecake. It’s all finished off with that graham cracker crust which I find tends to give flavours almost a bit of spice, not a biting spice but almost a bit of sharpness that’s hard to explain. Despite it there’s absolutely no bite to Cerberus with the blueberry and creamy cheesecake making sure it comes off nice and smooth. You’d almost think the three-headed guardian of the Underworld would have a bit more bite to it but I appreciate that they’ve kept it silky smooth.

Hades

Site description: A delightful custard that will keep your taste buds guessing. 80VG

My thoughts: This one is quite different for a custard flavour. It starts off as a pretty typical vanilla custard but then I pick up notes of brown sugar and something a little more unusual. The brown sugar really adds a darker depth to the usually light custard, a fitting addition to a juice named for the God of the Underworld. There’s also a hint of something I couldn’t quite place. Maybe it’s a bit of meringue or something kind of fruity as I pick up a little zest but at times I also get a hint of something like a licorice. Like the description suggests this one will keep your taste buds guessing and I couldn’t really nail down anything in it aside from the custard and possibly the brown sugar. Personally I’m not really a fan of licorice if that is in fact what’s in it and as much as I love custards this one didn’t quite work for me. I’m sure to those out there who enjoy it Hades will be a welcome addition but as it stands I have to pass on this one.

Zeus

Site description: A rich Greek lemon yogurt. 85VG

My thoughts: Zeus is very different from any yogurt flavour I’ve tried. It reminds of the old school yogurt flavours from back in the day as it has a little bit of that odd lactic taste so many of the originals used to have. I don’t really get that thick almost dry Greek yogurt taste that a lot of the newer ones have and that I enjoy. To be honest I’m not really a fan of the one they use in this mix, it tastes a bit,,, off. But we all know taste is subjective so where I might not enjoy it there’s always someone out there who will. That yogurt taste is accompanied by a rather bright and snappy citrus, like lemon with a bit of zest. A fitting flavour to represent the God of Thunder and Lightning. It really helps to cut through the thickness of the yogurt but it wasn’t quite enough to bring me around to this one. I’m pretty sure yogurt flavours have always been a polarizing flavour with some loving them and others absolutely hating them, I myself fall somewhere in the middle. I do appreciate a good yogurt flavour but I’m a little picky about the actual yogurt flavouring used. This one isn’t for me but fans of bright lemon flavours who enjoy yogurts will probably dig it!

Vape Slayer’s Morpheus

Site description: A smoked oak and toasted marshmallow tobacco. 90VG

My thoughts: Vape Slayer’s Morpheus the God of Dreams is probably my favorite from the line. It might be that it comes off a bit more complex then the others or it might just be my love for a good tobacco flavour. With Morpheus I’m treated to a wonderful blend of a sweet fresh tobacco with a deep oaky tone to it. It’s a bit like the oak barrel taste I’ve gotten from some Bourbon or Whiskey flavours that I’ve tried and it works surprisingly well in a tobacco blend. It’s definitely more of a fresh tobacco then a dry one, something like a Burley tobacco but there’s absolutely no bite to it or anything like that as some of the fresher tobaccos can have. It manages to be both rich and sweet but still stays light and would make for an ideal all day vape for any fans of tobacco flavours. For me this one is mostly about that smoked oak and tobacco as the marshmallow doesn’t really come through all that much on it’s own. I’m guessing it adds to the sweetness of it and almost gives it a creamy feel but without actually tasting like cream. Definitely for the more mature palettes and a tobacco lovers dream this one is the clear winner of the bunch for me!!

Overall:

I believe Vape Slayer Ltd. is a fairly new company and while I found the majority of their flavours are quite good the site and the labels lack just a little bit of polish. However since they are fairly new it means they still have plenty of room to grow. Sure there were a couple from the set that didn’t work for me but I really appreciate the variety that was included in the set and I’m sure most will be able to find one among them that they’d enjoy. If not for anything I’d just like to support the guy behind the company as he was one of the nicest guys I’ve met on the show floor. So huge thanks to Chris and Vape Slayer Ltd. for setting me up with these juices to review, it was a fun set to go through!!
