Honest review time: The Root from VanGo Vapes

Who doesn’t love a fresh frosty glass of frothy root beer straight from the tap? I know I do but sadly root beer flavoured vapes over the years have left me a bit wanting. I’ve tried plenty of them and for the most part they are accurate enough but more often than not the balance of the flavour, just isn’t right. It’s a cry that’s been echoed many a time. VanGo Vapes heard the call and never one to rest on their laurels decided to do something about it. Here are my honest thoughts on The Root from VanGo Vapes.

Bottles/Packaging:

The juice comes in a clear 60ml authentic Chubby Gorilla bottle for the standard version and a clear 30ml Chubby Gorilla for the salt version. The labels on both bottles bear a vanilla flower background with the name The Root dead center. All the usual regulatory stuff we like to see is there as well and the standard version comes in a 70vg blend while the salted version come in a 50/50 blend. The standard bottle I got was in 3mg while the salted version I got was 20mg.

Setup:

For the salt version testing was done in a Berserker MTL RDA with a simple 30g kanthal build, about 6/7 wraps on a 2.5mm coming out to about 1.8ohms and running between 10-15w. I also tested it in a Geekvape Frenzy with a fresh 0.7ohm mesh coil.

For the freebase version testing was done mostly in a Hadaly clone with a three core alien(3×28/36ni80) build from the Canadian Coil makers SaddleHorse Blues, 4/5 wraps on a 2.5mm coming out to 0.28 ohms and running between 35-45w. Using Puff cotton, rda rinsed and rewicked in between. Click here for a shot of the build.

The Root:

Site description:

From day one, our main objective was to create a flavor that not only tasted like what its supposed to, but that truly captured the full-bodied experience that Root Beer provides.

  1. First, we built the “rooty” base of the flavor by carefully selecting and balancing spices and unique earth tones in minute amounts.
  2. Then, we endeavored to replicate the sweet syrupy goodness of the flavor.
  3. Once we got that just right, it was time to blend these two flavor profiles together! We took the rootiness and the sweetness (which we referred to as “light” and “dark”) and combined them. This last phase took the longest because we wanted to ensure we achieved the perfect balance between “light” and “dark”.

The result is a beautifully balanced flavor that preserves the earthy authenticity of the flavor yet is also enjoyable to vape all-day-long. And yes, we’re pretty proud of it!

My thoughts:

Just based on the lengthy description alone you can tell VanGo are proud of what they’ve accomplished with The Root. After trying it myself, I’ve got to say what they’ve managed to pull off was no easy feat. Since the very first root beer flavour that I’ve tried they all seemed to suffer the same result, too much licorice or anise. They usually tend to taste fantastic on the first few pulls and then I’m left with the same overwhelming taste of licorice which just puts me off the flavour. With The Root I’m excited to say as much as I can still taste just the tiniest hint of licorice in the mix it never manages to overtake or overwhelm the flavour like so many before it.

It starts with a beautiful earthy blend of familiar spices which instantly reminds me of the classic sarsaparilla root based libation. It’s accompanied with a whole cacophony of other flavours like vanilla, anise and possibly a hint of wintergreen or something else that gives it a hint of freshness. Much more of a classic authentic sarsaparilla taste as opposed to a canned copy of the good stuff. It’s a truly perfect rendition that doesn’t suffer the shortcomings of so many others in it’s class.

That wonderful earthy spice is accompanied by that classic soda pop taste we’ve grown accustomed to and with just the right amount of that syrupy thickness they mention in the description. It’s a thick tasting flavour with plenty of body and depth that isn’t too sweet or spicy considering the profile. As far as I’m concerned it’s the first root beer flavour that I can actually stay on with and I’ve been vaping it steadily since it arrived. Definitely all day vape material and probably the best tasting soda based flavour I’ve tried yet.

Final thoughts:

My hats off to VanGo and the team. They’ve managed to accomplish something that so many others have set out and failed to do with a truly classic flavour that nearly anyone would love. If you’re a fan of a true Root Beer you need look no further than The Root. Fans of pop flavoured vapes and especially fans of the sweet brown stuff will definitely want to check this masterpiece out!! Great job VanGo!!
